If Members see themselves as parasites first and foremost, who are we to contradict them?

First they approve, then they are ashamed. In the Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies, the parties first approved an increase in the parliamentary indemnity for the group leaders of Montecitorio equal to just over a thousand euros, but then they dissociated themselves out of cowardice. They think it is right to pay a modest cash bonus to those of them who take on heavier work commitments in Parliamentbut since it is not clear whether they have just been cooked boiled, or in a pan over low heat, with milk, like the Vicenza-style cod, in the end they don’t have the courage to support the good reasons for the decision. Evidently convinced that they are treacherous bread-eaters, our representatives in recent years have first cut their salaries, then their pensions and finally cut themselves, not metaphorically, reducing their number by about half. So when Thursday it was learned that they had foreseen a small increase to equalize the salaries of group leaders with those of commission presidents, as soon as the news came out in the agency, they were all overwhelmed by panic. Out of self-loathing, one might say. And then one must really imagine these lion-hearted honorable gentlemen who, taking their heads in their hands and overcoming the surprise that the fact that it weighs so little causes them every time, begin frantically dictating declarations of bewilderment against their own decision, explaining that they will accept that money which they have also attributed to themselves, they specify that in any case it is a zero-cost increase, God forbid, they even let it be known that the poor things were present but abstained (teacher, the dog ate my homework). The crisis of politics, like Minerva’s Noctule, is a bird that rises in the evening, it can only be seen when the reasonable is replaced by the exciting ardor of stupidity. In short, on Thursday, for several hours, we saw these deputies pile up word upon word whose logic was impenetrable. Until we reached the end of this ballet, to which everything smiled, except for a sense, we asked ourselves a terrifying question: if they are ashamed of their salaries, if they don’t know how to defend their choices, if they think they are roughly useless saprophytes , Here you are, when they were the first to reach such a level of self-distrust, who are we to contradict them?
