A hot week has begun, and not only because of the heat, for those who have to travel to Italy. in fact, a 24-hour national rail transport strike by all Trenitalia and Italo personnel was confirmed, from 3 am on Thursday 13 July to 2 am on Friday 14 July. Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, Uiltrasporti, Ugl Ferrovieri, Orsa Ferrovie and Fast Confsal proclaimed it together. The strike could have a major impact on the country’s railway traffic. Not only in Milan and not only in Lombardy, there could be partial or total delays and cancellations of both regional trains, Intercity trains and also Frecce and Italo trains.

Guarantee bands

During the strike, the national journeys listed in the specific tables of the trains to be insured in the event of a strike are guaranteed, as well as the regional trains in the commuter slots (6-9 and 18-21), which can be consulted in the section Trains guaranteed in the event of a strike on the website. Trenitalia (READ THE LIST OF GUARANTEED TRAINS HERE) and Italo (Read THE LIST HERE).

Trenord trains

According to Trenord, the protest will go on between 3 on Thursday 13 and 2 on Friday 14 July. Therefore – writes the company – the regional, suburban, airport and long-distance services may undergo variations and/or cancellations. In the absence of airport service trains, buses will be set up, without intermediate stops between: Milan Cadorna and Malpensa airport. (READ THE NOTE FROM TRENORD HERE)
From Milan Cadorna the buses will leave from via Paleocapa 1; Stabio and Malpensa airport to ensure the S50 Malpensa Airport – Stabio connection. Trenord will guarantee guarantee slots between 6 and 9 and between 18 and 21, during which the trains included in the list of minimum guaranteed services will travel.

The motivations

As far as Trenitalia is concerned, the unions denounce that after the first strike action on 14 April last, the critical issues in the union dispute remain. We need – explain the trade union organizations – an adequate recruitment plan, a mitigation of workloads in the scheduling of crew shifts, favoring the reconciliation of working times with those of private life, the relaunch of the maintenance sector and restoring centrality to the sales network and assistance to passengers and technological investments, professional growth and training courses for all office staff.
With regard to Italo, on the other hand, the trade union organizations underline that the negotiations for the renewal of the contract, which expired in December 2021, suffered an abrupt halt in May, after eleven months of close confrontation, and remains to date in a phase of negotiation and distance between the parties, due to the company’s attitude of unavailability and clear closure in providing concrete answers to the requests of the trade unions.
The reasons behind the strike – reported by Filt Cgil, Fit-Cisl, Uiltrasporti, Ugl Ferrovieri, Orsa Ferrovieri and Fast Confsal – concern in particular the insufficiency of the economic proposal in relation to a fair appreciation of the variable salary elements, even when connected to the flexibility required by the company up to the finalization of the minimum wage tables, in line with the provisions of the National Collective Labor Agreement for Mobility/Railway Activities.

Inconvenience for those who fly

Saturday 15 July will instead be a difficult day for air transport. From 12 to 16 the pilots of the Malta Air company that operates Ryanair flights cross their arms. Filt Cgil, Uiltrasporti and Ugl Trasporto Aereo jointly called the protest following the signing by some subjects of a totally unsatisfactory agreement for the pilots category and given the company’s total closure to dialogue and confrontation. According to the three trade unions, this is an absolutely unsatisfactory agreement and not very respectful of the professionalism and contribution that the crew has ensured.
Filt-Cgil, Fit-Cisl, Uiltrasporti and Ugl then confirm the stop from 10 to 18 for airport handling workers. The abstention from work, union sources explain, was proclaimed in support of the dispute for the renewal of the employment contract which had expired for 6 years. Finally, from 10 to 18 strike by the pilots and flight attendants of the Vueling company who are members of the Filt CGIL due to the company’s lack of willingness to develop healthy and constructive industrial relations with the trade union organization most representative of the company’s workers’ needs.
