Government to challenge the municipal elections in May: here are the cities where it risks

For the Meloni government, the deadline for the municipal councils of 14-15 May is approaching, a test to verify whether the honeymoon with the electorate (confirmed in the regional councils of 12-13 February in Lombardy and Lazio) is still ongoing or not . Meanwhile, the opposition, with the election on February 26 of Elly Schlein at the helm of the Democratic Party, he tries to reorganize himself: even if the alliance knot (with the M5S? with the Third Pole? repositioning the wide field?) is far from dissolved, at least now there is a leader. Under the lens there are above all seven cities: Massa, Pisa, Siena, Sondrio, Terni, Treviso and Udine. These are the provincial capitals where the government is most at risk.

In Tuscany

Let’s start with the three Tuscan cities: Mass, Pisa, Siena. These are the cities that five years ago sensationally moved to the centre-right. It was the season in which the League was the host: the yellow-green government had just been born and shortly thereafter the Carroccio would pass over 30% at the 2019 European Championships. Matteo Salvini’s party managed to impose its own candidates in Pisa and Mass. But also in Siena, where the independent Luigi De Mossi took the field, it was thanks to the League that the coalition succeeded in the historic enterprise of conquering the three red strongholds. Now, however, the balance is changing in the center-right: it is Meloni’s party that is leading the coalition. Also in Massa, Pisa and Siena. And this could lead to quite a few turbulences in the negotiations for the reconfirmation of mayoral candidates

Sondrio, Terni, Treviso and Udine

But the light is on, for the same reason, also on the other four Northern League-led capitals called for the renewal of the administration: Sondrio, Terni, Treviso And Udine. These are cities where the League was historically strong. Or, it is the case of Terni, where the League five years ago took advantage of the long wave of consensus that had widened up to Central Italy. Here too, however, in recent policies, the Brothers of Italy has conquered the primacy of the coalition: the risk is that tensions will arise in the reconfirmation of the candidate for mayor, with the Melonians ready to claim more space.
