Government against foreign words. Sangiuliano: "A snob and radical chic"

The crusade against foreign words starts again. The government is at the forefront, with the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano and with the Vice-President of the Chamber Fabio Rampelli according to which “writing and speaking in an English or other foreign language also means preventing less educated people from accessing rights”.

The pretext for the umpteenth attack on the use of foreign terms is the will of the executive to speed up the inclusion of Italian in the Constitution, considered a priority objective especially for the head of Culture: “The consecration of the national language is in many Constitutions”, remarks Sangiuliano, who never misses an opportunity to stigmatize “the abuse of English-speaking terms”, son – he says – of a “certain snobbery, very radical chic, which often arises from the lack of awareness of the global value of Italian culture”.

Words released in an interview with Il Messaggero and which go hand in hand with those spoken by Giorgia Meloni: “Everyone, starting with myself, a great patriot, is overwhelmed by foreign words, by anglicisms, because ours is a very complex language. Use more the Italian language means using our culture more deeply”, said the premier during her speech at the assembly of ambassadors at the Farnesina.

The pressure from the executive suggests that the bills filed to enhance Italian will undergo an acceleration. Rampelli himself filed two bills to this effect: the first for the inclusion of Italian in the Constitution and the second on the protection and promotion of the language in the public administration.
