Strengthen the relationship with Algeria which has become our main gas supplier since the first half of 2022: 25 billion cubic meters of which make Italy its main customer. Giorgia Meloni today and tomorrow (January 22 and 23) will be in Algiers to nurture and develop a strategic partnership not only on the energy front that Mario Draghi had started immediately after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Uniting the two shores of the Mediterranean

The need to free oneself from Moscow was the goal. Meloni aims to take a further leap: on the occasion of the presentation of her government program to the Chambers, the premier launched the proposal for a “Mattei Plan” for Africa of which Algeria is the heart, indeed “the bridge” through which the two shores of the Mediterranean can be united provided that the confrontation takes place on the European side with a non-predatory but collaborative posture.

In the name the symbolic meaning

The decision to name the Piano after Mattei is in itself an easily understandable message. Especially here in Algiers where a garden – the only foreigner to receive such recognition – has been named after the founder of ENI in his name, with a stele commemorating Mattei’s support for the revolution and Algerian independence. In talks with the president inaugurated in 2021 by Sergio Mattarella (first visit after 18 years of an Italian head of state), in which the founder of the six-legged dog is remembered as a “friend of the Algerian revolution” and supporter of his “independence”.

With Prime Minister Bonomi and Descalzi

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by the CEO of Eni, Claudio Descalzi, and the president of Confindustria, Carlo Bonomi. The aim is to further strengthen the partnership between Sonatrach, one of the main Algerian companies operating in the hydrocarbon sector, and the largest Italian oil group through two new agreements which will still have gas and the Transmed pipeline at the center which reaches Mazara del Vallo but also green hydrogen. Bonomi, on the other hand, will sign an agreement with the Algerian Confindustria to facilitate trade between the companies of the two countries.

The value of the exchange

At a commercial level, in 2021 the value of Italy-Algeria trade was equal to 7.33 billion euros, of which 5.57 billion of Italian imports and 1.76 billion of exports. From January to September 2022, imports amounted to 12.2 billion, up from 4 billion in the same period of the previous year.
