The gas bill of the standard family in protection for June consumption (bills for July) decreased, marking -1.1% compared to May. The slight decline was determined entirely by the decline in spending on natural gas. In fact, the general charges and the tariff linked to the cost of transport and metering remain unchanged, while thanks to Bills Decree no. 34 of 2023, for the second quarter of the year (therefore also including June consumption), confirmed the reduction of VAT to 5% for gas and the zeroing of general system charges. In terms of final effects, the expenditure relating to gas for the typical household in the rolling year (July 2022-June 2023) was approximately 1,499 euros, gross of taxes, thus recording a -8.9% compared to the equivalent 12 months of the previous year (July 2021-June 2022).

The price of gas in June

As regards the component of the gas price to cover procurement costs (CMEMm), applied to customers still in the protected market, this is updated by Arera as a monthly average of the price on the Italian wholesale market (the PSV day ahead) and published within the first 2 working days of the month following the reference month. For the month of June, which recorded a lower average wholesale price than that of the month of May, the price of the gas raw material alone (CMEMm), for customers with contracts under protected conditions, amounted to 33.14 €/MWh.

Saved 10 billion cubic meters of gas

Meanwhile, there is greater attention from companies and households to consumption, which makes Italy a virtuous country from this point of view: between August 2022 and March 2023, around 10 billion cubic meters of gas were saved methane, the equivalent of 18% less than the average consumption of the same period in the last 5 years. This is a saving that exceeds by around 20% (2 billion cubic metres) the reduction of 8.2 billion cubic meters established by the national plan for the containment of natural gas consumption. This was calculated by ENEA, which also highlighted how the reduction in consumption in Italy was higher than the EU average.

The bills decree merges into the regasification terminal decree

As regards the interventions envisaged and postponed by the government to support the energy consumption of Italian families, the press office of the minister for relations with Parliament, Luca Ciriani, announced that the new Bill bills decree will flow into the so-called Regasifier decree. The government, reads the note, is about to present to the Chamber the legislative decree n. 79 containing urgent provisions to support households and businesses for the purchase of electricity and natural gas as well as on the subject of legislative deadlines, approved in the Council of Ministers of 28 June last. The decree, which was withdrawn by the Senate where it had already been presented, will now merge, for the part of competence, as an amendment of the executive to 57 currently in the Commission in the Chamber, the Regasifier decree.
