From weapons to the incinerator The (various) cases in which Schlein got out of control of Pd-Corriere.it

Controlling a party like the Democratic Party, as all its secretaries know well, it’s a tough business. Especially if the parliamentary groups are not in the image and likeness of the new leader and if the majority of members voted for another. So we understand why Elly Schlein
occasionally decide not to decide.

The last emblematic case in this sense is that of the vote of the dem MEPs on the ASAP (the law supporting the production of ammunition). A week earlier Schlein had sent Peppe Provenzano to Brussels to instruct the case and advocate abstention. In the secretariat all the loyalists of the leader had expressed themselves in favor of this choice, included Camilla Laureti, the only pro-Schlein member of the Eurogroup, who in fact then abstained. However, two days after the vote, the secretary preferred not to give any indications, because she realized that her position was in the minority among the European parliamentarians. Yet from Orlando to Majorino, a few days earlier, everyone was convinced: «We go to abstention».

But the match between the secretary and the Democratic Party did not end there. On Ukraine, the majority of dem deputies and senators follow the line set by Letta and now there are those who fear that Schlein could deviate from that path. Lorenzo Guerini hails the secretary: “I agree with the words of the President of the Republic which confirm the choice to support Ukraine in resisting Russian aggression”. Tradotto: be careful Schlein because you are out of line with Sergio Mattarella.

Also worried Lia Quartapelle: «We have not been able not to lend our side to left-wing populism. And in any case, in foreign policy there cannot be a position of the secretary, there is no way for everyone to go on their own». AND Pina Picierno he presses on: “Asap is not a choice between kindergartens and missiles.” The mayor of Milan also intervenes Joseph Sala: «It is necessary to supply more weapons to Ukraine».

In short, an outcry that Schlein cannot fail to take into account. But this is only the latest case. Preceded by other similar episodes. The first, that of the waste-to-energy plant in Rome. The secretary, who has always been against incinerators, was forced to put on a brave face, given that the mayor Robert Gualtieri and the vast majority of dem parliamentarians (especially those from Lazio) were in favor. And therefore he silenced the Environment Manager Annalisa Corrado for a few days. Other chapter: surrogacy. The leader of the Democratic Party is “in favor” but since the deputies and senators are mostly against it, she is not carrying on this battle. And in the meantime, to avoid possible forward escapes by Schlein loyalists, personalities such as Goffredo Bettini and Giorgio Gori signed a manifesto against surrogacy. What about the story of the appointment of group presidency offices? They haven’t been able to do it for a month because Schlein wants to defenestrate Peter DeLuca (guilty of being his father’s son) but so far she hasn’t succeeded.

After the electoral defeat, the leader asked for time. And it’s probably going to take him quite a while to finally get himself in control of his “his” party. Of course, a success at the European Championships would pave the way for her.
