The first stop was Algeria, now Italy’s leading gas supplier. But in Giorgia Meloni’s plans there are other trips to North Africa to define the contours of what the premier calls Piano Mattei. The goal is to weave commercial relations with African countries “in which both partners must be satisfied and grow”, she explained, inspired by the approach with which Enrico Mattei guided ENI’s African expansion in the 1950s it’s 60s. Meloni wants to make Italy the leader in relations with the countries on the other side of the Mediterranean as well as “the fundamental hub for the distribution of energy in Europe”. The message, of course you, is also addressed to Brussels. “The EU must think about it, wondering if there is an energy interest and if there is no point in coordinating.
