With the increase in the cost of living, the salaries of Sicilian parliamentarians adjust. Until now the remuneration was equal to 11,100 euros gross per month, but the vote of the Sicilian Regional Assembly on the internal budget led to an increase of 890 euros gross per person which will fall under the adjustment item according to the change in the Istat index. Total: 12,000 euros gross per month. Counting an audience of 70 regional deputies, spending thus rises by 750 thousand euros a year for a total of 11.2 million euros for 2023.
The law
The adjustment to the inflation index was taken into account years ago with the approval of the regional law n. 1 of 4 January 2014. The law provides for an adjustment to the cost of living – they explain from the Ars offices -. Over the years, the allowance and per diem of deputies have lost purchasing power: so far, with inflation just above zero, it had not been necessary to raise the salaries of deputies. Now everything is up. However, the mayors of the island’s municipalities are causing controversy. At the end of January, after the regional assembly of the Anci (National Association of Italian Municipalities), the first citizens of all of Italy received the resources necessary to adjust their allowances. The same was not the case for those in Sicily, which has not received additional funds since it has complete autonomy over this item thanks to the special statute.
Sicilian mayors
The municipal administrators, unlike the Sicilian parliamentarians, were forced to cut other items of their compensation, giving up a compensation comparable to that of colleagues in the rest of the country. The president of Anci Sicilia, Paolo Amenta, has announced his intention to put the question to the president of the region, Renato Schifani, and to Gaetano Galvagno, head of Ars. For us at this point it is not a mere claim – he said -. We will not cut services to citizens to increase the salaries of administrators, but it must happen to us too.
The budget of the Ars
The internal budget approved by the Sicilian Regional Assembly amounts to 133.5 million euros, with a reduction in cash and accruals of half a million euros compared to last year. Compared to 2012, when the figure reached 162.2 million, there was a reduction of 28.7 million. The aforementioned downsizing of the budget is part of the virtuous path of reducing the expenses of the regional parliamentary institution which began with the 2013 financial year, reads the report of the college of quaestors.
