Florence, the Chamber of Commerce study: «It is increasingly difficult to find workers»

The labor market in Tuscany slows down, materializing the concerns that emerged from the estimates made in recent months: the impact of the war in Europe, the high energy price and the logistical difficulties attributable to the Covid pandemic have begun to impact employment. The data is contained in the study conducted by the research office of the Florence Chamber of Commerce which, in the Excelsior report, photographs the labor market in the metropolitan area in November. Compared to October the flows of incoming workers are two thousand less and are back on the same level as in 2019: hiring went from 9,600 in October to 7,600. Furthermore, the forecasts for the November-January quarter indicate that companies will hire just over 23,000, around 8,000 less than in the same period last year. Part of this decline can be attributed to the fact that in 2021 hiring, after having hit “the low floor” in the midst of the pandemic, had returned to growing consistently because they started from a very low base level. But it is also true that «the local labor market is in an uncertain phase in which the first effects of the economic deterioration are beginning to be felt. The demand for work in the private sector presents expectations from companies which are starting to have a negative orientation, representing a materialization of what was already feared in the previous month», write the technicians of the Chamber in the report. Meanwhile, work is increasingly precarious: fixed-term work on a cyclical basis remains substantially constant at around 63%. Paradoxically, at the same time those looking for workers often do not find them, according to a now consolidated trend which instead of weakening is getting stronger. In fact, in November the difficulty of finding by businesses settled on a level that continues to rise compared to the previous months, going from 49.5% to 50.3%.
