European elections 2024, the dates and what you need to know

The decision of the Member States on the elections between 6 and 9 June 2024 will be finalized at the next useful Council, probably already on 22-23 May next.

The procedures for determining the European election date are fixed in the Electoral Act of 1976, which foresees that the elections to the European Parliament are held in the same period of time between the morning of Thursday and the following Sunday. The Electoral Act stipulates that the default dates correspond to those of the first European Parliament elections (7-10 June 1979), which for 2024 would translate into 6-9 June. If it proves impossible to hold elections on the default dates, the Council can establish an alternative period, unanimously and after consulting the European Parliament.

For the 2024 elections, the European Parliament had requested to bring forward the elections to 23-26 May, in particular to meet the Mediterranean countries which would already be on vacation in the week of June. It was not possible to find a unanimous agreement on the Parliament’s proposal nor on possible alternative dates to the natural one of 6-9 June (as requested by two Member States). On the Italian side – explains a diplomatic source – there is satisfaction “for the finalization of the important institutional step and for the solution identified”.
