Eni and Rina, the agreement to develop green fuels in the nautical sector - Corriere.it

Develop the use of green fuels on ships, evaluate their level of CO2 emissions (from production to consumption) and test carbon capture (CCS) on board. These are the goals behind the agreement between Eni and Rina, a multinational inspection, certification and engineering consulting company. The two companies are committed to increase the use of Hvo biofuel in the naval sector (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil), produced by Eni in the Venice and Gela biorefineries, and other energy vectors, such as hydrogen and blue or green ammonia from biogenic, renewable or waste raw materials that do not compete with the food supply chain.

Green fuels on the compartments

The agreement also provides for the development of initiatives involving the entire logistics chain of new energy vectors and the adoption of certified methodologies for the taxonometric calculation of the benefits in terms of minors CO2 emissions made possible by the new vectors along the entire chain of the value. The possibility of carrying out experiments and pilot projects will also be evaluated in the field of CO2 emissions capture processes on board, to help pursue the sustainability objectives of the naval sector.

Electric mobility in the nautical sector

This is not the only novelty at Eni. Plenitude, through its subsidiary Be Charge which deals with the dissemination of infrastructure and charging services for electric mobility, and Energica Inside, the business unit of Energica motor company dedicated to researching innovative solutions for e-mobility, have signed an agreement to develop technologically advanced projects. For example, extending electric mobility to boating and installing charging stations in Italian ports for offering consumers new ways of moving around, even on the water. The acronym makes it possible to develop a new electric marine vehicle, a prototype of electric watercraft, the Runabout model. The technologies will be provided by the startups Energica Inside and Electric Revolution.
