A journey with the lights off, looking for transatlantic shores and re-establishing relationships born in the last legislature: Luigi Di Maio in the United States. The former foreign minister has transversal meetings between business and politics on the agenda. In recent days, above all, Di Maio has had two face to face. The first in New York with Kalid Khiari, UN representative who follows the Middle East for Guterres. Khiari was Tunisia’s permanent representative to the United Nations in recent years while Di Maio was minister. And just with the UN secretary general Di Maio was spotted in a French restaurant in the Big Apple. The former number one of the Farnesina instead saw Mike Pompeo in Washington, former head of the CIA, Republican, secretary of state at the time of the Trump government.

At a time when the former minister is waiting still an answer on the role of EU representative for the Gulf countries, he also participated in the National Prayer Breakfast (where he was seen together with Bill Nelson, Biden’s plenipotentiary appointed head of NASA, whom Di Maio had met in July in Italy before the fall of the Draghi government). Not just politics, but business as well. Di Maio according to insiders would have taken part in focus with some US think tanks such as the Atlantic Council, the Middle East Institute and Cepa. Di Maio also gave a speech at the Italian embassy in the US, at the invitation of the Council for relations between Italy and the United States (whose president Domenico Siniscalco, former economy minister between 2004 and 2005 with Berlusconi premier). The American trip served Di Maio to revive a dense plot on the international chessboard with a view to untying the knots of his professional future.
