A 17-year-old black man shot by police at a roadside check, the attacker. “Shot at point blank range, unacceptable situation.” The defender: «Look for extenuating circumstances, a method as old as the world»

“My France hurts me.” Thus the striker of the French national team and of Paris Saint-Germain Kylian Mbappe — absolute star of French football — reacts to
death of young Naël, the 17-year-old killed yesterday at a roadside check in Nanterre, in the Parisian district of La Défense.

Boy was it shot Tuesday morning by a policeman – now in prison – during a check: the episode was filmed by a passerby and sparked rather violent reactions throughout France. “An unacceptable situation. All my thoughts to the family and loved ones of Naël, an angel who flew to heaven too soon,” added Mbappé. Naël was stopped and, in the video, the policemen can be heard telling him “I’ll put a bullet in your head.” The car restarts and the officer then arrested shoots immediately. The Mercedes ends its run a few meters later, on the sidewalk: the boy, shot in the chest, will die shortly after.

In the first version the police claimed that Naël had tried to run over the agents, a version denied by the video.

It is not the first time that Mbappé has taken sides against the “unacceptable” violence of the police: in 2020 the music producer Michel Zecler had been beaten and insulted (with clear racial references) and Mbappé together with Antoine Griezmann had taken a stand.

For Naël, another member of the blueidefender Jules Koundé: «A 17-year-old boy was shot at point-blank range by a police officer for refusing to obey a roadside check. This is the reality of the situation, and it is dramatic. However, Barcelona’s talent also underlines another aspect of the story: the media’s attempt to unload the blame on the young man: «The 24-hour news channels are giving it their all. Television programs disconnected from reality, “journalists” who ask “questions” with the sole purpose of distorting the truth, criminalizing the victim and finding extenuating circumstances that do not exist. A method as old as the world to hide the real problem».
