Because free trade is the best weapon against the enemies of democracy

The question is simple and even more so a year and a half after the invasion of Ukraine: more globalization equals more freedom. There was a time when the transversal front of nationalist populism tried in every way to describe the defense of democracy and the defense of the market as concepts in conflict with each other. There was a time when the enemies of globalization, enemies convinced that the flooding of the market could coincide with a reduction of the freedoms of a given country, tried in every way to denounce how dangerous it could be for the sovereignty of a nation, the multiplication of free trade agreements. There was a time when anti-globalism theorists tried in every way to demonstrate how a country’s excessive exposure to market dynamics could become counterproductive for the defense of peoples’ freedom. That time, however, is over. And Russia’s invasion of Ukraine exposed a different, contrary, even counterintuitive dynamic.
