Arnaldo Forlani, historic leader of the DC, has died

He died at the age of 97 in Rome Arnaldo Forlani, one of the most important and well-known exponents in the history of Christian Democracy, of which he was secretary for about seven years in the periods 1969-1973 and 1989-1992. Among the main government posts he has held are: Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Defense and State Investments. He was the architect, together with Bettino Craxi and Giulio Andreotti, of the pact of power that the newspapers renamed Caf (from the initials of the three). He was also in the running to become president of the republic in 1992.

The head of state immediately expressed his opinion on the death of Forlani Sergio Mattarella: “I am moved to hear the news of the passing of Arnaldo Forlani, and I wish to express my feelings of solidarity and closeness to my children and family members. Forlani was a prominent personality of the Republic for a long season, and his action in the government and in the relative majority party contributed to the direction of the country, its democratic growth, economic development and the consolidation of the Italian role in Europe , in the Atlantic Alliance, in the international forum. He leaves a very important mark in the history of the republic”, writes the President of the Republic on the canals of the Quirinale. “He was Prime Minister in a phase of profound changes, he held various important ministerial positions, he was elected to Parliament for over 35 years and concluded his parliamentary activity in the European Parliament. The democratic Catholic training pushed him from a very young age to political commitment, first in his native Pesaro, then assuming increasingly important functions in the Christian Democracy of which he was the protagonist and leader in crucial passages, not only for his party but for the country intro. The firmness of the positions was united in him with a style of courtesy and with a respectful attitude towards the interlocutors even of opposing positions, attitudes which themselves assumed a political and democratic value”. adds the head of state.

He served politics and never served it“, commented Pier Ferdinando Casini. “He had great satisfactions in his public life and just as many bitternesses. He faced everything with a profound Christian faith and great humanity. In the next few days there will be time to reflect on his political work: a pro-European, an Atlanticist, he has always vigorously defended the collaboration between DC and socialists. He is perhaps the last of the great protagonists of the Christian Democrats of the First Republic, to whom we must say thank you and goodbye”.
