The first secretariat of the Schlein-managed Democratic Party took place in Riano. A symbolic place, given that in the summer of 1924, the body of the socialist parliamentarian, Giacomo Matteotti, killed by the fascists, was found in Riano, a small town on the outskirts of Rome. The secretary paid homage to Matteotti’s stele, together with the mayor of Riano Luca Abbruzzetti. “I have never seen national leaders here in this monument – said the mayor – we have always tried to bring this day into the national limelight and it is an honor for us today to have the secretariat of the Democratic Party”. Elly Schlein, with all her team, then moved to the “La Rosta” recreational club to start the work.

“We are very happy to be here, we are discussing and listening to each other to understand how to set up this new secretariat”, Schlein said at the end of the meeting, speaking with journalists. She then replied to the words of the president of the Senate Ignazio La Russa on anti-fascism and the Constitution: “I heard Russa’s words, she said that anti-fascism is not in the constitution, well, anti-fascism is our constitution”.
