Amato: “Inclusion strengthens democracy”

Giuliano Amato, former president of the Constitutional Court, thus intervenes at the Festa dell’ottimismo del Foglio this year. He repeats that climate is the real challenge and that there is no possibility of facing it except in a community vision: “Could a country by itself be able to tackle climate change?”.

On the big issues, Amato insists on how the nationalistic perspective – understood as of “national identity” – must be an integral part of the European one. But now, even on a national scale “we have aggregations made not ‘for’, but ‘against’ something”. And Amato is convinced that this could contribute, in our country, to the “recomposition” of the two historical sides, the “nostalgic one for fascism and that of anti-fascism”. Polarization is not, however, a political response, which must be one of inclusion: “The more it is included, the more democracy is strengthened: I collaborated with Gianfranco Fini for this and he came to speak of fascism as an evil “. And this is true in the greatest challenge which is that, says Amato, of climate change:” I quote the words of a minister of the current government : there are no solutions, but the world is going through a formidable phase of innovation “.
