Of Emanuele Buzzi

The former Speaker of the Chamber on the reformulation of the basic income: “An ideological choice that distances us from other countries, made against the most fragile people”

Roberto Fico, the basic income no longer exists. Instead of her there will be Mia, active inclusion measure.

«They are only indiscretions, but they are already enough to show a government in confusion. They are prey to their contradictions, from immigration to justice. And also on the fight against poverty. Only one thing is clear: resources have been cut in this area with the latest budget law. This is a very bad sign, which shows a short-sighted government with respect to the needs of citizens and families”.

The new measure actually reduces the amount and the audience of those who will be able to receive.

«Abolishing the basic income was an ideological choice that takes us back to the past and distances us from other European countries. A choice made against the most fragile and struggling people. Meloni and Salvini made a serious mistake just to do something against the 5 Star Movement. We will see how the new proposal will be structured, but it will certainly protect fewer people and in a less incisive way. They would make a better impression to apologize and restore income.

However, not everyone criticizes the executive. Codacons applauded the government’s choice.

“I’m not concerned with political reactions but with the protection of citizens who now receive basic income”.

You brought down the Draghi government to defend your battles, primarily income and the Superbonus: these measures have been skipped. Did you have the wrong strategy?

«The Draghi government fell because the political context had changed and the political conditions had changed. The Movement has consistently maintained its line with respect to issues on which it has always worked and which it has continued to pursue, such as those related to the environment and the question of the incinerator in Rome”.

In opposition you will be able to do very little for Superbonus and income: now what are the political objectives of the Movement?

«We can wage a political battle to defend two important measures, and we will do this in Parliament and outside. Then in our program there are also other proposals: minimum wage, reduction of working hours for equal wages, ecological transition. We will do our job as an opposition force and present citizens with structured proposals, alternatives to those of the right, another vision of society. And then there is the clear no against differentiated autonomy as designed by Minister Calderoli ».

The management of migrants is an important issue. What do you think of the CDM in Cutro and of Piantendosi’s work?

«The council of ministers in Cutro is just a spot, Meloni should have gone earlier, it would have been appropriate. Piantedosi will dutifully report to Parliament today after the embarrassing and shameful words spoken in Calabria. That’s not enough: even Minister Salvini must soon report to the Chambers on what falls within his competence. We need clarity as to why rescuers did not intervene to save those people a few meters from the coast”.

You are touring the South against differentiated autonomy. He was also one of the main promoters of the axis with the dem. Would you see Conte and Schlein at your side in some stages?

«I will make three more stops in Calabria in the next few weeks. In recent days I have met citizens concerned about the impact that differentiated autonomy could have especially in the south. There were participatory meetings and we will organize other initiatives to turn the spotlight on the issue. The Movement is at the forefront of the fight against differentiated autonomy, a rule that can widen the gaps and divide Italy, while the country should be united and made increasingly cohesive. It certainly can be an issue on which to converge with the Democratic Party. We need a clear opposition to this provision.

In the meantime, the polls show you all behind the Democratic Party…

«Even on the eve of the last elections, the polls showed us much lower. Then the elections are something else».
