The Senate approves the decree on sending new weapons to Kyiv. The Carroccio votes yes. But in his speech, the group leader Romeo accuses those in charge of Europe and the United States of not doing enough to achieve peace. Almost marrying the position of the M5s

“The real impression, it’s useless for us to fool ourselves, is that nobody really wants the war in Ukraine to end”. These are the accusations that the leader of the League, Maximilian Romeohe brings in his speech to the Senate. With 125 yeses from the hall, the new Ukrainian decree was approved a few minutes ago which determines a new shipment of arms to the invaded country. The text will now pass to the scrutiny of the Chamber. But, during the debate, the League clearly distanced itself from the address of the majority of the Meloni government, which has always sided in favor of maximum support for Volodymyr Zelensky’s country.

“Let’s start with the facts,” Romeo began. “There is no room for a truce: the last one didn’t last even 3 days; Putin, the invader, has changed military leaders, which shows the will to continue the offensive; Zelensky declared that ‘not there can be peace without the lost lands”. In essence, he is saying that only by returning to the borders of 1991, therefore also by recovering Crimea, can the famous territorial stability be guaranteed. It is clear that Putin will never allow it. And that, on the contrary, his imperialist delirium, if attacked, could lead to a third world war, or at least to a nuclear war” declared the Northern League leader. These are not new words for the senator, who already last December 13 expressed himself in a very critical way regarding the concession of new armaments to Ukraine. The League, through his representative, therefore takes a skeptical position regarding the ultra-Atlantist line of the premier, so much so that at the end of his speech, Romeo makes an appeal: “Let’s remove that idea, the dominant mentality of those in charge in Europe and the United States, that peace can only exist with the defeat or, even worse, the humiliation of Moscow. Otherwise we would only risk talking about peace in a hypocritical way”.

Thus the League, a majority force, expresses concepts not dissimilar from those of the opposition. In fact, even the Senator of the 5 Star Movement, Hector Licherirails against the alleged hypocrisy of the top government regarding the invasion, arguing that not enough efforts are being made for diplomacy, peace and negotiations. “It’s a matter of logic and consequent behavior: either you send weapons or you work for diplomacy, there’s no middle ground. Then throw off your mask of hypocrisy and have the courage to tell the Italians the truth”. And he continues, also evoking the nuclear threat posed by Vladimir Putin’s country: “Do you think it is enough to send more missiles and tanks to corner a nuclear power led by a man willing to do anything? Do you want to beat Russia militarily?”.

The League, unlike the 5 stars, has nevertheless voted in favor of the new decree on the shipment of weaponswhich, with the go-ahead of the majority of senators, is therefore about to reach the final phase.
