US President Joe Biden has chosen a top Wall Street manager who grew up in India and has nominated Ajay Banga, former CEO of Mastercard, as the new president of the World Bank. The White House reports it in a note.
Indian chief Banga’s appointment following the abrupt resignation of incumbent President David Malpass comes as the United States and other member states seek to broaden the World Bank’s mandate to include the fight against global warming. Banga – explained the American president – understands the challenges that developing countries have to face and has experience in mobilizing private money to face the most urgent challenges of our time, including climate change.
The United States has traditionally been in charge of choosing the president of the World Bank, as the main shareholder. Subsequently, however, the support of all other nations is necessary.
