The unemployment rate in Italy in April fell to 7.8%, with a reduction of 0.1 points compared to March and 0.4 points compared to April 2023. This was noted by Istat, underlining that people looking for work fall below the two million mark and they are 1 million 986 thousand, therefore down by 14 thousand units on March and 72 thousand units on April 2023. During the month, the employment rate rose to 61%, while the inactivity rate dropped to 33.6% (- 0.1 points on the month, -0.9 on the year).

The labor market is tight and to secure the necessary personnel, companies are entering into more stable contracts. According to Istat data, temporary employees grew by 74,000 in April and by 468,000 over the year. Fixed-term employees decreased by 30,000 in April compared to March and by 149 thousand units on April 2022. Overall, the number of employed persons grew by 48 thousand units on March and by 390 thousand on April 2022. Permanent employees are approximately one million more than in April 2021.

Comparing the February 2023-April 2023 quarter with the previous one (November 2022-January 2023), there is an increase in the number of employed persons of 0.5%, equal to +123 thousand units. Compared to April 2022, Istat reports, both the number of people looking for work decreases (-3.5%, equal to -72 thousand units) reaching 1 million 986 thousand people and the number of inactive people aged between 15 and 64 years (-3.0%, equal to -383 thousand). Finally, Istat reports an increase in permanent employee employment and a decrease in fixed-term employment. Permanent employees increased by 74,000 on the month and 468,000 on the year while temporary employees decreased by 30,000 on March and 149,000 on the year. Independents grew by 5,000 units per month and by 71,000 per year.
