Employed people are still growing in Italy and reach the highest level ever recorded since, in January 2004, when Istat began the monthly surveys. In fact, they attest to a 23.3 million employed in January 2023, with an employment rate of 60.8% (+0.1 point). Compared to the annual comparison, there are 459,000 more units.

Istat indicates that employment has grown overall by 0.2%, equal to 35,000 more units, especially for women, permanent employees and those over 35 years old. In January, a decrease was recorded for temporary employees, the self-employed and young people. There are still many, however, and people looking for work are growing: on a monthly basis the figure registers a +1.7%, equal to 33,000 more units and they are mainly women or under 50 years of age. Also growth for the rate unemployment which in January 2023 stood at 7.9% (+0.1 points), youth at 22.9% (+0.7 points). The decrease in the number of inactive people between the ages of 15 and 64 (-0.7%, equal to -83 thousand units) involves men, women and people over 35 years of age. The inactivity rate drops to 33.9% (-0.2 points).

2023 “opens favorably from the point of view of the labor market”, says the Confcommercio research office. The same increase in the unemployment rate can be interpreted in a positive sense, because it is “induced by greater participation in the labor market, as underlined by the decline, for the second consecutive month, of the inactive”.
