Why Schlein's Democratic Party panicked over Meloni's new photo with the Pope

Elections and fears. Reformist base, Catholics and even a part of the left are worried about Bergoglio’s decision to participate side by side with the premier in the great kermesse on the birth rate. Some fear it is due to the secretary’s position on surrogacy

In the Democratic Party, there is a certain albeit cautious satisfaction with these administrations which arises from the belief that the Democratic Party has now reversed the negative trend and will have a good affirmation in the European elections, the one that will serve Elly Schlein to force Giuseppe Conte to an agreement in view of the next political elections. But despite this, there is also a certain fear among dem parliamentarians. Fear not related to yesterday’s electoral results or even to the challenge of the ballots. What worries some (reformist base, Catholics and even a piece of the left) is – listen, listen – Pope Bergoglio. Already him. His decision to participate side by side with Giorgia Meloni in the great birth rate event has generated concerns. This pope has always been seen by the left as very close and the idea that he can distance himself is seen as a possibility that will not do good for the Democratic Party. It may be conspiracy theory, but a good portion of the dem are convinced that this novelty has a lot to do with the position taken by the secretary Elly Schlein on surrogacy. The dem leader said she was personally in favor of this practice even if she was keen to clarify that her opinion does not commit the party, which in fact has not presented any bill on the matter. But certainly her “openness” on surrogacy has paved the way for that piece of the Democratic Party furthest to the left and for the new entries linked to Schlein who would like to ask the question and not let it drop. These are probably excessive fears, the fact is that in the small groups of dem for a few days they have been talking about nothing else.

But there is also a new element of unease in this Democratic Party which has yet to take the measures of its new leader. In fact, most did not like the decision of Marta Bonafoni, coordinator of the national secretariat, to participate in the protest under the court against the trial of the activists of the latest generation environmental group, accused of having smeared the Senate. Apart from the fact that the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, filed a civil party in that trial, what has aroused some amazement is the reversal of the line that the Democratic Party has been pursuing for years. That is, not to attack the judiciary. In short, a demonstration before a court to protest against a trial is certainly not the style that the Democratic Party has held up to now, it is more of an authoritative exponent. The dem turned up his nose when he saw that instead Marta Bonafoni’s initiative was “covered ” from the same secretary.

The insistence with which Matteo Renzi is removing the ground from under Carlo Calenda’s feet is worrying the leader of Action a lot. The former minister of economic development has convinced himself that the number one of Italia viva has a precise strategy in mind: that of making him lose his nerves and corner him, forcing him to go back on his break and definitively archive the Third Pole project as a single party, opening instead to the federation that Matteo Renzi has always thought of. In fact, the leader of Italia viva wants to try to involve other forces and representatives of other parties, who do not want to become regimented in a party, in the federation. The final goal is always that of the Europeans. Renzi is convinced that this is the formula with which a greater number of consents can be obtained and then presented at the negotiating table when the political elections arrive.
