Great book, I told him. He nodded with a half smile. The book was Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. The gaze and the images of the Oxford philologist have come a long way, from the nocturnal conversation in Addison’s Walk, riverside, when under a gust of autumn leaves the young teacher declared inspired that every man is a mythopath, he is made to project stories on the world, populates clouds and leaves of grass from elves and dwarves, grafting his own individual story into a larger epic narrative.
