The body of the 18-year-old (she would have turned 19 on 8 October) was found at 5.30 this morning lying in the car park in front of the hotel. The time of her death has not yet been disclosed.
Julia Ituma had arrived at the beginning of this season in Novara, after having played for three years at Club Italia, the team that brings together some of the best Italian volleyball players and was considered by most as one of the most promising Italian opposites. With the under-20 national team, Julia Ituma won the world title in 2021 after beating Serbia in the final. In 2022 she won gold in the European Youth Olympics Festival and then the under 19 European Championship (always beating Serbia), a competition in which she was elected Mvp.
The Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, after viewing the images from the surveillance cameras of the hotel corridor showing the last minutes of the young woman’s life, advanced the hypothesis that she may have taken her own life. At the moment, however, the Turkish authorities have not released any statements.
“The Consulate General in Istanbul, the Embassy in Ankara in close collaboration with the Farnesina are following with the utmost attention the sad story of the very young volleyball player Julia Ituma, found dead in Istanbul, Turkey, where she was with her team, the Igor Gorgonzola Novara, for the Champions League match. The Consulate General immediately took action with Julia’s family to whom it is providing maximum assistance while a constant link is ensured with the team and its sports director, as well as with the Italian Volleyball Federation and the local authorities”, he wrote in a press release from the Farnesina.
