Elly Schlein makes her debut as dem leader and the troubled process of the Democratic Party congress ends. With the Pd assembly, held today at the Fuksas “Nuvola” in Rome, the approximately one thousand delegates (705 in attendance and 221 online) will officially proclaim Schlein secretary and Stefano Bonaccini president. He is among the very first to arrive at the Eur congress centre Dario Franceschini, who had been the first to choose Schlein together with his wife Michela De Biase. The presidency agreement paved the way for that unified management of the party which until now had remained confined to the courtyard of announcements and intentions. No splits, no counts. “There will be a joint vote on the president and the management – Bonaccini told his delegates – These are steps that it is important to take together, as signs of party unity”.

“With Schlein today we have an alternative to the right that is proving to be inadequate in government,” he said Nicola Zingaretti arriving at the assembly. “No one can understand the issue of currents better than me. We are a party that has a pluralism of ideas, but it becomes our weakness when pluralism remains only the management of power. We must find a party that places itself at the service of Italy needs. Today a journey begins with Elly Schlein and I believe there will be more and more”, adds the former secretary. However, many boxes still remain to be filled. Meanwhile, always with the assembly, the vice-presidents, the treasurer and the management will be elected. And then, in the following days, the secretariat will have to be put together and who will be called to the roles of group leader in the Chamber and in the Senate: the hypothesis of a replacement of Simona Malpezzi at Palazzo Madama and Debora Serracchiani at Montecitorio with two parliamentarians close to Schlein: the name of is mentioned for the Senate Francesco Boccia and for the House that of Clare Gribaudo, who was today at the Cutro demonstration with the delegation that represented the Democratic Party. But the Bonaccini area has not yet given up hope of indicating the parent company in the Chamber. In that case, the name of Simona Bonafé is mentioned. For the treasurer, the possibility of a confirmation is not excluded Walter Veriniwhich supported the run of Gianni Cuperlo to the secretariat.

After more than a week of underground skirmishes, in recent days Schlein has offered Bonaccini the presidency, thus closing a longer and more tense negotiation than expected. The green light to the presidency of the governor of Emilia-Romagna has made the path towards the direct involvement of Bonaccini’s supporters in the secretariat easier, as requested by the new secretary, who aims to dictate the line, but with a unitary management, which also involve the other souls of the party.

For the assembly, the appointment is from 10 to 17 at the convention center in the Eur district. To open the day, a minute’s silence for Senator Bruno Astorre, who passed away in recent days, and then greeting video messages from representatives of European socialist parties: the president of the PSE Stefan Löfven, the president of the Group of Socialists and Democrats at European Parliament Iratxe Garcia-Perez, the president of the SPD Lars Klingbeil and the leader of the Belgian socialist party Paul Magnette. From the Democratic Party they let it be known that “the colors green, white and red will frame the audience of the Auditorium”. Title of the day: “The strength of the community, for people, for the planet”.
