Sources from the EU executive have leaked it: the issue was discussed in last Thursday’s talk in Rome between the commissioner for the internal market, Thierry Breton, and the premier Giorgia Meloni. Brussels expects concrete answers in the short term from the government, otherwise ready to go ahead with the infringement procedure against Italy. The European Commission is pressing for the Italian government to revoke the extension of concessions contained in the Milleproroghe and adopt the Bolkestein directive on the liberalization of the sector as soon as possible.

The conversation between Meloni and Breton

Sources from the EU executive let it be known that the issue was raised in last Thursday’s conversation in Rome between the commissioner for the internal market, Thierry Breton, and the premier Giorgia Meloni. The EU executive expects concrete answers in the short term from the government in Rome, otherwise ready to go ahead with the infringement procedure against Italy, with the request for a reasoned opinion to which Italy must respond within two months, under penalty of appeal to the EU Court of Justice.

The letter from Brussels

The letter, however, reports an EU source close to the dossier, should not be included in the package of infringement procedures for the month of April which will be presented this Wednesday. The Commission is also looking at the preliminary ruling of the Court of Luxembourg, scheduled for Thursday, which will rule on the questions posed by the Lecce Administrative Court, but, from what has been learned, the judgment expected in Brussels should be in line with the Commission’s position on the application of Bolkestein.
