The derailment of a carriage of a freight train belonging to a private company, which occurred on the night of 20 April between Sesto Fiorentino and Florence Castello, effectively cut Italy in two. The circulation of trains was interrupted between Firenze Castello and Bologna because – as FS explains – even if the accident did not cause consequences for people, the infrastructure was damaged so important as to prevent the regular passage of trains. The Milan-Rome and Venice-Rome high-speed lines are therefore blocked, as is the Florence-Prato-Viareggio regional line. It is one of the most important railway lines in Italy: hundreds of trains passing through the country every day and, at the moment, those traveling north have only insured high-speed connections up to Florence and must stop here. Same thing for those traveling south, who must get off at the Bologna station.

Reduced bookings

It is still impossible to say when circulation will return to normal. Currently, RFI technicians are at work but in the next few hours, travelers must expect partial or total cancellations of regional and high-speed trains. For now, the trips insured are those along the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic lines, while the backbone line is completely blocked. Meanwhile, on railway booking sites, the possibility of making purchases is greatly reduced, while Fs informs that travelers will all be reimbursed.
