Newcastle have completed the purchase of midfielder Sandro Tonali from Milan. The young talent from Brescia has joined the English club for an undisclosed fee and has signed a contract until 2028, the club said. The figure is estimated to be up to 60 million pounds (70 million euros).

“He’s an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical qualities to be a big player for us,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. «At 23, Sandro already has an important experience as a key player in one of the best European leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his national team. But he also has the opportunity and the potential to grow and evolve with us, and I’m thrilled to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead.” Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund-owned Newcastle are preparing for a return to the Champions League after qualifying for European club competition elite for the first time since 2003. Tonali was part of the Milan squad that won the Serie A title in 2022.

Transfer market: Dzeko to Fenerbache, Tonali close to Newcastle

The former Brescia player played 14 games for his national team. “First of all, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are giving me an enormous opportunity for my career,” said Tonali. I want to repay that trust on the pitch by giving my all, as I always have. I’m really excited to play at St. James’ Park, I can’t wait to feel the warmth of the fans».

“Thank you Sandro.” Milan officially bid farewell to Sandro Tonali, sold outright to Newcastle, thanking the player and publishing a photo of him accompanied by two simple sentences: “It was a wonderful journey together. Your Rossoneri family wishes you the best.”

Tonali are Newcastle’s first big signing this summer as Howe looks to build a side capable of competing in the Premier League and Europe. Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Southampton full-back Tino Livramento and potential loans for midfielders Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City and Conor Gallagher of Chelsea.
