Toghe / Does Nordio “play” for the citizens?

And it will always be me, Liana Milella, a journalist from Repubblica who has been dealing with justice for this magazine since 1997, and before that for Il Sole 24 ore and for Panorama since 1988, to tell you the behind-the-scenes and news, even exclusively, that it is precisely on this matter that they divide politics.

The history of justice in Italy, of its laws, of the constant attempt of the centre-right, from Berlusconi to today, to coerce them to guarantee impunity, is the history of a very hard battle to guarantee citizens’ democratic rights and survival – as long as we we will all be able to defend it – of our Constitution.

By coincidence the blog Robesborn in 2011, and the newsletter Robes – I’m too fond of this name to imagine changing it – they will find themselves facing the same controversy, the reforms that the center-right, then with Berlusconi, and today with the Meloni-Nordio team, wants to impose on judges and also on citizens. This majority passes off the forthcoming laws as “guaranteed”. Instead, I consider and read them as an obstacle to justice itself. Certainly the separation of careers does not speed up trial times by a single day. Nor does the clampdown on interceptions help citizens to see a higher rate of legality guaranteed.

Reforms are in sight. Minister Nordio announced them in Parliament, dividing them into four chapters, which he summarized as follows: “Changes on the interception system, on pre-trial detention, on crimes against the public administration, on the secrecy of guarantee information”. The Toghe newsletter, step by step, will tell you why these alleged reforms, which are actually fragments of interventions, including the suppression of the crime of abuse of office, a clear freedom for all in the name of illegality, will trigger a perennial conflict with the judiciary , but they will not give citizens the daily security of living in a peaceful and more just world.

The right to know the truth

With less power to intercept, fewer crimes will be discovered. With precautionary custody, i.e. a preventative arrest, the risk of seeing the same crimes repeated will increase. Because even the smaller ones are. The modification of crimes against the public administration will upset the well-established jurisprudence and will cause ongoing trials to fall, certainly benefiting unscrupulous administrators. The tightening of the right to information will mean that you will all have less news than today.

Because unfortunately, the freedom of the press annoys the current powers. They consider it a luxury to cancel. This is why the “indiscretions” contained in a piece become “inferences”. For this reason – with arrogance – the palace of power criticizes an article and threatens immediate retaliation. The Melonian imprint of obedience to the sources and silence prevails over everything that has not already become a public declaration. We are in the regime, in the deprivation of liberty, in the denial of the right to inform. Halls of democracy and our Constitution.
