Tim closes its offices on Fridays: 3 days of smart working a week for 32,000 workers

Friday will be the day of smart working for 32 thousand employees of the group Tim (there are 42 thousand in Italy). The union agreement that the company has signed with the unions provides for an organization in which 2 days of work are in the presence and 3 days are remotely. One of these 3 days will always be Friday. This will allow the offices to close on Friday to ensure energy efficiency, cutting CO2 emissions and a more stable organization of the work at home and in the office.

The chief human resources and organization officer, Paolo Chiriotti, explains that in recent months “a serious and constructive discussion with the trade union organizations” has been carried out, which has led to “an agreement that lays the foundations for the construction of a more mature of smart working. Our people who work from home will be able to count on an established system of protections, such as the right to disconnectand of rules, such as the days in co-presence, which favor company stability and the improvement of productivity.

Furthermore, with the introduction of the closure of the offices on Friday, we have achieved an important result for the environment and for work-life balance of our employees. On this front, Tim’s commitment does not only include smart-working: for many years the company has been committed to supporting its people through various projects in areas that guarantee concrete support in managing family needs and this is one of the cornerstones of our welfare model».

From 2 to 3 days of smart working

Going into the merits of the agreement, it will have a duration of 13 months (from 1 February 2023 to 29 February 2024) and will concern approximately 32,000 group employees. With the closure of the offices on Fridays, it will go from 2 to 3 days of smart working: this will allow employees to better plan their extra-work activities, to strengthen the co-presence between colleagues in the office on other days of the week and to achieve energy efficiency and the relative reduction of CO2 emissions. Given that the company has 12 thousand employees in Rome, while in Milan 3,700, the impact of the agreement will be very significant because it will reduce the commuting of the company’s workers by 60%.

The daily and weekly modes

There will be two agile working methods, daily and weekly, based on the different degree of autonomy, the possibility of organizing work by objectives and the different working hours. The daily model is applied to organizational areas characterized by activity by objectives with an adequate level of autonomy and flexible hours and includes 2 days in the office and 3 in smart working. The weekly model, on the other hand, is applied to organizational areas in which the activities carried out are hetero-organised, which do not allow work to be organized by objectives and where it is essential to guarantee supervision in specific time frames: in this case, a week of four days in office and a week in agile.
