Meloni’s accusations on the management of the emergency: “No more restrictive models”. Former Minister Speranza: this is how you please the no vax

The clear and multi-level criticism, which Giorgia Meloni, in her programmatic statements to the Chamber addresses to those who managed the Covid emergency, provokes a harsh reaction from the protagonists of that season. As the former Minister of Health: “She is still afraid of displeasing the no vax who voted for her”, Roberto Speranza’s rough, hot reply. Defended also by Pd Secretary Enrico Letta: “We are proud to have Speranza among our desks – he says in the reply in the classroom – which represents everything that Italy has done in these difficult years to try to win one of the most complex challenges that the our country has ever had to face. The sentences of Meloni on Covid are frankly creepy ».

The management of the virus also further divides the opposition: unlike the Democratic Party, Italia viva filters appreciation for the hypothesis of a commission of inquiry on Covid. While the president of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte, in his speech, does not touch the subject.

The debate was triggered by the words of the premier who, not being able to exclude a return of the contagion, however, ensures that “the most restrictive model of the West will not be replicated”. And it promises “clarity” in the name of those who “lost their lives while others were doing millionaire business”: a commission of inquiry, sources from Fratelli d’Italia specify, “Not punitive against the health personnel who have kept the system up and running” but “to put those who have exploited the emergency to enrich themselves”.

Speranza, who led health policy both in the second Conte government and with Draghi, was the first to lunge. «The Italian model has put the protection of the right to health and scientific evidence at the center. You regret that Meloni has not yet come out of the electoral campaign: not a word about vaccines, essential to end the toughest phase ».

Scientists take up different positions, as they were positioned during the emergency. “The governments that faced the pandemic in Italy followed the best scientific certainties available – recalls epidemiologist Pierluigi Lopalco – we have done nothing contrary to the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the European Center for Disease Control ”.

The infectious disease specialist Massimo Andreoni urges caution. «The measures to be taken in the future will depend on the progress of the epidemic. The hope is that restrictive measures will no longer be needed ».

On the contrary, the microbiologist Maria Rita Gismondi: she is associated with Meloni’s judgment. “The failure of pandemic management was before everyone’s eyes and, if we hadn’t finally found a courageous leader capable of changing course, we would never have gotten out of this nightmare. I hope that the new minister Orazio Schillaci will open his mandate with a return to normality ». And the Genoese infectious disease specialist Matteo Bassetti approves the new route to the point of suggesting the first measures: “Eliminate the isolation of positives and the obligation to swab to enter some structures”, such as nursing homes.

The Covid issue, however, also has a political implication: the convergence of IV with the majority. In the evening Maria Elena Boschi is clear: “On the commission of inquiry, as a responsible opposition, we are ready to collaborate”.
