After the drop in October, in November the gas tariff increased by 13.7% for families under the protection regime. The tariff concerns November consumption but will be applied to December bills. For the month of November, the price of the gas raw material is therefore set at 91.2 euros per megawatt hour, equal to the average of the prices recorded daily throughout the month that has just ended, explains Arera. While the reference price of gas for the average customer, taxes included, is 122.41 euro cents per cubic metre. Based on the calculation method introduced by the Authority, the gas price component to cover procurement costs (CMEMm), applied to customers still under protection, is updated as the monthly average of the price on the Italian wholesale market (the PSV day ahead) and published within the first 2 working days of the month following the reference month.

Bill of 145 euros per month

In terms of final effects, the gas expenditure between 1 December 2021 and 30 November 2022 of approximately 1,740 eur

or, +63.7% compared to the equivalent 12 months of the previous year (December 1, 2020 – November 30, 2021), explains Arera. Which means an expense of around 145 euros per month. For those who had received, in the last few weeks of November, a bill with the advance value of the CMEMm component relating to the month of November based on the value of the previous month, the recalculation will be made, in the first available bill, with the actual value published on Friday 2nd December.

Consumer associations

The data on gas tariffs for the month of November confirm our concerns about the new calculation model decided by Arera which, in fact, does not change the substance for consumers and does not cancel the price increases, says Assoutenti commenting on the tariff update of the gas. In the long run, for consumers, the change in the reference gas market will be worse than the previous one: according to our simulation, 7 times out of 12 the PSV market proved to be more disadvantageous than the TTF. More than changing the calculation method, it is necessary to impose administered prices, starting from the transparency of the real costs of the raw material. According to the Codacons, compared to the tariffs in force in the last quarter of 2021, the increase equal to 26.4%, with the cost of gas which, due to today’s update, rises by an average of +358 euros per family.
