The ECB led by Christine Lagarde is once again moving its focus on fighting inflation and therefore it is very probable that at the next meeting on 4 May there will be a new rate increase of between 0.25 and 0.50 per cent. The statements made in recent days by the chief economist of the Eurotower, Philip Lane, by the governors of the Belgian and French central banks, Pierre Wunsh and François Villeroy de Galhau, and above all the extensive interview given to Politico by Isabel Schnabel, member of the executive committee of the ECB, leave no room for doubts: the monetary tightening must continue, even if its extent will depend on the macro data, Schnabel stressed.
