From radiators to incinerators, from pollution to climate: a crucial discipline of physics. The beauty of these theories is that they require only a little familiarity with the basic principles of mechanics

The dark mustache on the wall above the radiator. The despair of the landlady. An annoying signal: the painting of the whole environment must be arranged. The one in the photograph is a radiator in my house, but I’m sure that mustache is present on everyone’s walls, in homes and offices, wherever the radiator is turned on regularly. However, I’m not sure that everyone knows why the dark mustache is formed: so I’ll try to explain it, because this will lead us to reflect on crucial aspects of our life in which physics enters heavily. And we will also retrace an important moment in the history of physics in the second half of the 19th century.
