The European stock exchanges are preparing to defend their positions at the start of a session which will be dominated by the wait for the publication of the data on US inflation for January. Meanwhile, Asian markets are gaining ground in the wake of Wall Street after it emerged on Monday that US household income growth expectations have drastically reduced, removing the risk of a price-wage spiral and thus fueling optimism on the inflation front. Futures on the Eurostoxx 50 are unchanged, while contracts on the Ftse Mib are up 0.17% in Piazza Affari.
Piazza Affari and the other Stock Exchanges
Start in positive territory for Piazza Affari: the first Ftse Mib index marks a growth of 0.25%, the same as the Ftse All share. The other stock markets of the Old Continent are also a few fractions above parity: the London Stock Exchange opened up 0.2%, with Frankfurt and Madrid on the same level. Paris and Amsterdam grew by 0.1% (here the price lists updated in real time).
Spreads
Stable spread at the start in a context of general contraction of yields on the euro curve. Initially, the yield differential between the 10-year benchmark BTP (Isin IT0005518128) and the German equivalent maturity stood at 180 basis points, stable compared to yesterday’s closing. The yield of the 10-year benchmark BTP fell, which scored a first position at 4.14% from 4.18% of the previous reference (here the Spread in real time).
Currencies, oil and gas
On the currency market, the euro still strengthened moderately to 1.0734 from 1.0714 at yesterday’s close. The yen gains ground after the appointment of Kazuo Ueda as new governor of the Bank of Japan. One euro is worth 141.68 yen (from 142.27) and the dollar slips to 131.97 (from 132.76). Oil prices are down: the March contract on the WTI drops 0.89% to 79.43 dollars a barrel, while the April future on Brent slips by 0.46% to 86.21 dollars. The price of natural gas in Amsterdam rose by 0.6% to 52 euros per megawatt hour.
