Of IDA BOZZI

In the new issue, on Sunday 23 on newsstands and on the App, the two writers “sentenced to death” discuss the power of the word. Digital extra: the opening words of Andrew Sean Greer’s new Pulitzer novel

Both, since the day of the “death sentence” have tried “not to feel reduced to just that”: Salman Rushdie (on which hangs the fatwas Islamic) and Roberto Saviano (sentenced to death by the Casalesi clan) had already met in 2008 at the Nobel Academy and are now talking again, eight months after the attack that cost Rushdie the loss of an eye. And they speak, yes, of threatened life, but also of literature, fantasy and the power of the word.

With the broad interview-dialogue by Saviano and Rushdie the new issue of «la Lettura» opens, #595, on Saturday 22 April available as a preview on the App and on Sunday 23 at the newsstand. An intense exchange, which touches on the themes of the new book by the Indian naturalized English writer, the epic The city of victory (Mondadori), whose genesis Rushdie recounts: the almost magnetic contact with the protagonist Pampa Kampana, ancient India, the link with heroic poems. They swap opinions on writing, on the grip that the fantastic has on human beings, on the risk that ignorance brings with it.

And when they broach the topic of life under threat, both underline how their “haters” stopped at that sentence, while they went on to write books.

Many other rumors about the number: David Diop (author of The door of no returnNeri Pozza, in bookstores from 25 April) interviewed by Alessia Rastelli; Andrew Sean Greer he tells Giulia Ziino about his America on the occasion of the release, on April 25, of the new novel Less wanderingtranslated by Elena Dal Pra for The Ship of Theseus: the incipit of the novel in preview is the Theme of the Day of the «La Lettura» App on Sunday 23 April); Stefano Bollani (with the new record blooming) interviewed by Helmut Failoni; And Vinicio Capossela (with the disc Thirteen urgent songs) in a dialogue with Ermanno Cavazzoni (his book The big liarThe ship of Theseus) by Severino Colombo.

In addition to the most recent number of the insert in preview already on Saturday, the «la Lettura» App for smartphones and tablets (downloadable from the App Store and Google Play) also offers subscribers the weekly newsletter and access to the archive of all the releases since 2011. And every day also a digital-only extra in-depth analysis: the Theme of the Day. Subscribe

Among the focuses available in the Themes section of the App: a passage, at the time expunged by the same author, of the novel by Franz Kafka The castle: the passage is found in the original manuscripts, published for the first time in the new edition (Bompiani) of Kafka’s works, about which the curator Mauro Nervi writes in «la Lettura» #595 on newsstands and App.
