The reform of the EU pact on migrants to the test of the EU Parliament: the EPP opens up to the financing of walls

The Italy case on the migrant dossier reaches the Eurochamber and risks weakening the axis between the Popolari and the Socialists which has so far held up the Ursula majority. The EPP leader, Manfred Weber, kicked off the dance, who first made a clear opening to the requests brought forward by Giorgia Meloni and then, in Strasbourg, asked for an ad hoc debate in the Chamber “on the Italian emergency”. The blitz of the Popolari, however, was only half successful: the proposal for discussion on Italy passed but with the title desired by the S&D and the Greens. A title in which reference is made to our country but, above all, to the “necessary European solution to the migration crisis to facilitate the saving of lives”.

Opposite FdI, left with an anti-Italian face

The line desired by the centre-left was approved with 252 votes in favour, 119 against and 13 abstentions. And in the end it was also the Ppe who voted for him. On the other hand, FdI was against it, which supported, in vain, the request wanted by the Popolari. «Once again the left has shown its true anti-Italian face, supporting the request of the socialist, green and communist groups which reduces the need for a European solution to just saving lives, forgetting the need to regulate immigration also protecting the external borders», protested Nicola Procaccini and Carlo Fidanza.

Weber’s Moves

In any case, the debate will be held on Tuesday afternoon and will be attended by the Commission and the EU Council. It had already seemed clear from Weber’s move that the Plenary was inflamed over the migrant dossier. In an interview with Corsera, the leader of the Popolari chose to use the carrot for Italy and the stick for the capitals targeted by the majority, Paris and Berlin. «I thank the Italian government for the way it welcomes migrants and tries to save them. Other countries like Germany and France have to help. They must voluntarily bring migrants with a right to asylum to their territory,” said Weber. Not only.

Funds for anti-migrant walls

The Bavarian MEP clearly asked the Commission to speed up repatriations with third countries and announced the presentation of an amendment to the review of the European budget to use European funds for anti-migrant walls. Weber is using populist arguments for the very serious challenge of immigration. The problem is that he is imitating the far right. Walls solve nothing,” was the reaction of S&D group leader Iratxe Garcia Perez. The clash has just begun and could also undermine the green light for the negotiating mandate awaited in the EP on the first package of measures of the reform of the Pact on migration and asylum. MEPs have until midnight on Tuesday to lodge a written objection, for which a quorum of 76 members is needed.

The dialogue between the EPP and the Conservatives

The dialogue between the EPP and the Conservatives also runs along the track of migrants which, after the Europeans, could subvert the pattern of the Ursula majority. In the EPP the debate is open and it intersects with the rebus of who will be the future Spitzenkanidaten of the Populars. On the one hand there is the president of the EP Roberta Metsola, who according to the rumors of the Eurochamber is on the rise. On the other, Ursula von der Leyen, who has not resolved her reservations and who, perhaps not by chance, met the board of the CDU on Monday. And the Christian Democrats are ready to support it.
