The message of the head of state on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Order of Journalists: respect for the professional activities of journalists is an essential component of our system of freedom

The good of information enjoys explicit constitutional protection. The art. 21 of the Charter, in stating that “Everyone has the right to freely express their thoughts in speech, writing and any other means of diffusion” underlines the value of the press as a medium, indicating that “it cannot be subject to authorizations or censorship . On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Order of Journalists, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, writes that the global market with which we are called to deal with in the Information Society needs robust guarantees, such as those offered at the Union level by the proposals put forward during the elaboration of the Media Freedom Act. Respect for the professional activities of journalists is an essential component of our system of freedom. The aggressions and intimidations of which their work is still sometimes subjected are intolerable for the Republic.

Journalists, according to the head of state, have an enormous responsibility. A responsibility accentuated by the multiplication of information sources offered by the web revolution. First of all, the journalistic profession is entrusted with the role of expressing free criticism according to the duties of loyalty and good faith. In this context, journalists have been given the important task, for the purposes of free formation of citizens’ opinions, of respecting the substantial truth of the facts.
