The postponement of the strike in Italian skies and airports in extremis – given the floods in Emilia Romagna – did not help much. On May 19, more than 400 connections were canceled in our country, more than one out of ten of those scheduled. It is what emerges from the analysis that the Courier carried out on the numbers provided by the specialized site FlightAware. The paradox at this point is that on June 4, when the unrest has been postponed, the passengers will effectively face a second strike.
Short while
Following a request from the Ministry of Transport, the main trade unions decided, in the afternoon of 18 May, to postpone most of the strikes to Sunday 4 June, starting with the four-hour handling strike, from 12 to 16. The same was postponed day also the agitation of the staff of Air Dolomiti. But the move came a little too late for the carriers who didn’t have time to restore all flights in our country.
The airlines
The final result shows at least 403 flights — departing and arriving — canceled, equal to 11% of the total scheduled. According to data from the specialized platform, Ryanair, the first company in Italy, canceled 80 connections, followed by easyJet (74). Then Ita Airways with 54, which managed to halve (there were 109) the cancellations on Friday 19 May. Followed by Lufthansa and its regional subsidiary Air Dolomiti (29 for each airline), Wizz Air (20), Air France (19), and so on. Some intercontinental connections with the United States were also skipped.
At airports
Milan Malpensa was the airport hardest hit by the strike with 55 outbound flights canceled and another 39 arriving. Then Venice (55 connections in all), Milan Linate (55), Rome Fiumicino (42), Naples (37), Bergamo (33), Catania (27). If we consider the global picture, about a quarter of the flights that did not take off on 19 May concerned Italy.
