Granddaughter Elio, chief rabbi of Rome for 50 years, engaged in telling the new generations: If the Shoah is not explained well, there is a risk of making a cauldron

Lia Toaff, 36 years old, one of the exponents of the new generations engaged in the story of the Memory of the Shoah. Her grandfather was Elio Toaff, Chief Rabbi of Rome from 1951 to 2001. Lia Toaff worked for five years at the Holocaust Museum Foundation and for fifteen at the Jewish Museum in Rome.
How can memory be transmitted by belonging to a new generation?

I have always dealt with the Holocaust primarily as a historical fact. I tell the facts through the evidence of the documents. We must avoid slogans, rhetorical expressions, clichés.
Was the figure of your grandfather important in your choice?

Basic. I listened to all the stories of him: those that concerned him personally and countless others.
Is there a danger of the Remembrance Day ritual?

We see it in the young people who come to the museum. If you run into rhetoric they roll their eyes, they get bored. If the Holocaust is not explained well, there is the risk of making a cauldron in which so many events end up: the various deportations get confused, for example. And trivialization is precisely the road that can lead to the repetition of tragedies.
