The EPP in revolt against Berlusconi for his statements about Zelensky

Revolt in the EPP against Silvio Berlusconi. The discontent emerged today during a meeting of the European People’s Group in Strasbourg. The declarations of the leader of Forza Italia against Zelensky last Sunday held the ground. A dozen delegations, mainly from the east and north, explicitly asked for a Manfred Weber, president of the EPP, a statement to stigmatize the words of the leader of Forza Italia. Not only. They have also threatened to boycott the EPP study days scheduled for next June in Naples if Berlusconi is present.

Weber replied that the Popolari have a problem with the Cav. and not with Forza Italia and that the statements of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are closer to those of the EPP than those of the former centre-right prime minister. Tension is still high in the delegations. And Weber’s speech in the Chamber is expected tomorrow on the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. The line was meanwhile expressed by a tweet from the group which “firmly rejects the observations made by Silvio Berlusconi on Ukraine. They do not reflect our political line. Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is the victim. We will not give in to Putin’s narrative and Ukraine can count on our full support.”
