The different positions on same-parent couples, inside and outside the government

New themes, old divisions

From rainbow families to surrogate wombs. For Giorgio Mulè (Forza Italia) we must start again from the Zan bill, “without ideological prejudices”. According to Northern League Pillon, “a demolition of the family” is underway. So rights make the majority discuss

The stop of transcription in the registry of children of same-parent couples in the municipality of Milan forces the majority to discuss the – slippery – issue of rights. The last recorded positions are those of Simone Pillonformer senator of the League, e George Mule, vice president of the Camera di Forza Italia, both interviewed in today’s newspapers. If for the Carroccio exponent we are witnessing a “family demolitionstep by step, behind the slogan ‘Love is love'”, the blue deputy says “ready to meet couples other than marriage between a man and a woman“: assuming a discussion that starts again from the Zan bill – the dem bill rejected by the Senate during the Draghi government -, “without ideological prejudices”.

Fratelli d’Italia had already expressed itself on behalf of its vice president of the Chamber, Fabio Rampelli, who spoke on Saturday evening in the broadcast “In onda” on La7. His words on “surrogate motherhood” – which according to Rampelli assigns children “a grow up in a tormented life simply because they wish they had a mother, as nature intended” – started a chain reaction between government and opposition parties, in a reciprocal rebound of accusations. Rampelli’s intervention was criticized above all for the use of a verb, when he said that: “If two persons of the same sex ask for the recognition, i.e. the registration in the registry office, of a child who they pass off as their own child it means that this surrogacy has been done outside the national borders”.

But the rift crosses first of all the majority, as can be seen from the comment on Rampelli’s words. Pillon has no problems defending the exponent of FdI: “The law clearly provides that the rented uterus is a crime, so it doesn’t seem to me a particularly heinous term“. On the other hand, Mulè’s interpretation is opposed, according to which Rampelli would have run into “a lexical accident“. To these is added the Minister to the Family Eugenia Rockella interviewed by Lucia Annunziata on “Mezz’ora in più” on Rai 3: “Surrogacy is prohibited and you have to call it by its name”, says the exponent of FdI. And she announces a law “against surrogate wombs”.

In the ranks of the opposition, the Pd – through its new secretary – announced a law, ready and to be scheduled in Parliament, which can broaden the perimeter of rights. Schlein’s proposal follows the tweets of Calenda, who however underlines the need to maintain as a “crime the Gpa (pregnancy for others, ed)”. Thus declarations and clarifications illuminate the boundaries between the different parties, on both sides of the alignments and also within them.
