The new project of Monica Biancardi, «The Catalog of Huts», for the Shazar Gallery in Naples (via Pasquale Scura 8) which opens tomorrow Saturday 21 January (preview from 4 pm) is a graphic narrative punctuated by geographical maps, statistical data, engravings and scratches that outline the story of a pain hidden by surfaces transparent. Only light and shadows reveal the protected reality of a “hut”, a house that is no longer a refuge but a prison, the space of an existential nightmare rendered by Biancardi with light poetry, a childish language that opens to reflections on the conditions of women . The theme is in fact that of the violence suffered by women.

The artist’s denunciation starts from the period of the lockdown displayed in a paper map in which the areas highlighted with the dates indicating the closures also report the increased risk of suffering violence. The work which is a real report, albeit artistically represented, born as a world mapping in which the countries take on the appearance of huts and show percentage numbers inside them (which, preceded by a + sign designate the growth, compared to the previous year, of reports of abuse or mistreatment of women) is however illusory, because too many countries – democratic and not – declare completely misleading percentages. The result is therefore the completely bogus and hypocritical character of the statistic, which in the meantime “goes hand in hand with ideology, disguised as a scientific product”. The project is accompanied by a series of drawings of huts engraved on paper and accessories or products of daily use engraved on plexiglass, represented as double-edged weapons that attack the female sphere. The exhibition will remain open until 18 March 2023 from Tuesday to Saturday from 14.30 to 19.30 and by appointment.
