The breakup of the Third Pole in Parliament: Calenda forced into the Mixed?

After the divorce in words, now it’s the turn of the facts: the representatives of Action and Italia viva will meet in the coming days to establish the “future organization of the parliamentary groups”, in the light of the now completed division within what was the Third Pole. While the exodus from the party of Charles Calenda – in addition to the deputy NaikeGroupioni and the secretary of Emilia Romagna Giulia Pigoni, both passed to the Renzians, yesterday it was the turn of the secretary of Piedmont Giancarlo Susta – the dates have already been established: Third party senators will meet on Saturday, next Tuesday it will be the deputies’ turn. The controversies and the rebound of accusations will not fail. And the formation of two independent groups in the houses of Parliamentnow it seems only a formality.

Thus, as has already been foreseen for a few weeks, the fears of the Calendians risk becoming reality: unable to form an independent list, Action senators would be forced to join the mixed group in the Senate. The numbers speak for themselves: the representatives of Action in Palazzo Madama would remain four, while the minimum threshold required to be independent is six. They are the same numbers that, on the other hand, save the senators of Italy alive: with the entry of Enrico Borgo, snatched from the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi’s faithful have risen exactly to the requested amount. A strategy of the former Prime Minister developed in the past few days by dint of persuasion: so much so that Borghi, when things are done, would be appointed leader of Italia viva in the Senate. For the Chamber, however, the former minister is rumored as a possible leader of the Renzians Maria Elena Boschi or, alternatively, the deputy Mauro Del Barba.

Finally, there is an economic question, which the parliamentarians of the Third Pole will have in mind when discussing the confrontation between the two shores. Because at stake, in addition to political weight, there are also reimbursements to parliamentary groups, a fundamental resource for party expenses.
