The best TV series to watch in July, in pills

A July more beach than serial, the one that lies ahead on the small screen. Some seasonal returns, a couple of spy stories and a touch of revival. For the rest, we await better (serial) times.

The Prince (Netflix, July 4, docuseries)

The serial month opens with a Netflix Italia docuseries. In the centre, the story of Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, starting from 18 August 1978, the date on which Corriere della Sera gave news of the killing of the nineteen-year-old Dirk Hamer who was on board the same boat in which Vittorio Emanuele was travelling. . The royal is accused of the murder of the German and then acquitted. A narrative in three episodes that aims to tell (trying to make it iconic and interesting) a figure who is all in all perceived as marginal for today’s public opinion. We’ll see if that goal is achieved.

The Full Monty – The Series (Disney, July 5)
One looks with dutiful circumspection at this dramedy series which takes its cue from the film of the same name released twenty-five years ago. The characters are the same, always in the setting of the post-industrial city of Sheffield, this time gripped by serious economic problems and a social crisis. Each episode will focus on a different character, leveraging a little on the nostalgia effect, a little on the desire to see characters already known to the public but in a different light – and key.

The horror of Dolores Roach (Amazon Prime Video, July 7)

Horror series inspired by a podcast that tells the story of Dolores Roach, released from prison after serving a sixteen-year sentence for a crime she never committed. The woman returns to her Washington Heights neighborhood, finding it hostile and totally changed. The only one who seems to want to give her a chance to reintegrate is Luis, an old toxic friend of hers who allows her to work in her massage center in a cramped basement. But to survive Dolores will be forced to face the impossible.

The company you keep (Disney+, July 12)

Ten episodes (and no second season, as already announced by ABC) for this dramatic series starring Milo Ventimiglia. The story revolves around Charlie Nicoletti, a con man of Italian American origin who tries to free himself from the debts contracted with the criminals belonging to the family of Daphne Finch. The boy, imprudently, spends a night with Emma who turns out to be a CIA agent who is also on the trail of the Finch – but with very different methods.

Foundation (Apple TV+, July 14)

The Apple series adaptation of the science fiction saga signed by Isaac Asimov is back with a second season. Set more than a century after the end of the first season, when tensions within the galaxy are now uncontainable, the tale centers on the figure of a vengeful queen determined to destroy the Empire from within. The Cleons have dissolved and the Foundation has now entered its religious phase. A genre story, of which it is essential to recover the first season if you want to fully understand the narrative world and the dynamics that inhabit it.

A spy among us (Sky Atlantic and Now, July 17)

The most awaited title of this July which promises to be – without major competitors – the highest quality series in the summer panorama is Una spy among us. The miniseries, available on Sky Atlantic and Now, is set during the Cold War and is inspired by the true story of two British spies – Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby – longtime friends. Philby is actually an undercover KGB spy who will have to juggle loyalty to his mission and to his closest loved ones. In the cast, in the role of protagonists, Damian Lewis and Guy Pearce. A typical spy tale packaged with the usual British care.

Special Operation: Lioness (Paramount+, July 23)

Always in the spirit of espionage – with thriller variations – the new series created by Taylor Sheridan comes out. Cast of discreet stars including Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana to tell about Joe, a CIA agent who works in the counter-terrorism division and who seeks a balance between personal and professional life. In the special operation Lioness, in which Joe works, the marine Cruz will also be hired, enlisted undercover to foil the possible next 9/11.
