The anti-mafia prosecutor Melillo replies to Nordio: “I don’t know of useless interceptions”

“Efficiency and guarantees must grow together: there must be no setback in the use of interceptions, personally I don’t know of any useless ones, since they are all ordered by a judge”. This was reiterated by the national anti-mafia and anti-terrorism prosecutor Giovanni Melillo during the hearing before the parliamentary anti-mafia commission. For Melillo, “a shift of resources from one investigative side to another” is unimaginable, and “it is increasingly urgent to direct investigations into cyberspace, before the gap that has already matured becomes irreparable”.

The national Antimafia prosecutor Melillo specified that “there are extremely delicate and invasive investigation activities that are already typical of interceptions and at the same time there is a deficit in our ability to penetrate digital networks which are by now familiar environments of large and small networks criminals. Everyone is needed to make this leap by removing such a delicate matter both from the dangers of polemical fury and from gross simplifications. The initiative of the Presidency of the Council helps to hope that this can happen within the framework made of respect for the attributions and positions of all”.
