Tajani pro tempore president, the post-Berlusconi era begins for Forza Italia

It is the day of Antonio Tajani who, currently the only candidate, will obtain the leadership of Forza Italia until the next congress. A choice in continuity and “in a natural way”, as the deputy Giorgio Mulè defines it when speaking of the national coordinator. And above all with the hope that the consecration of the 213 Azzurri councilors – gathered this morning at the Parco di Principi hotel in Rome and who will vote for the regency, behind closed doors – will be unanimous. In addition to the post-mortem “blessing” of Silvio Berlusconi, who will be remembered with a video tribute at the beginning of the National Council.

The Cav’s name is and will be in the symbol

One month after his disappearance, the party is looking ahead. And it tries to fortify itself, despite electoral weakness and internal feuds, which have so far been kept at bay. He does it with little novelty. Perhaps the only one concerns the Statute of the party: unknown for years and obscured by the decision-making of the Cav, now it becomes “law”. In the name of article 19 of that document tomorrow the election of the regent will take place. And on the basis of the same text, the role of the founder will be officially recognized, and therefore “armored”. In other words, it will be put on paper that Silvio Berlusconi’s name is and will be in the Fi symbol.

Marta Fascina announced absent

After the homage to him, there will be a greeting from the national coordinator and the launch of the Council, the body that brings together the general staff and a large part of the elected Azzurri. Then the parliamentary group leaders Paolo Barelli and Licia Ronzulli will intervene, probably the vice presidents of the two chambers (Giorgio Mulè and Maurizio Gasparri), the ministers, the governors (the name of the Calabrian Roberto Occhiuto is mentioned), presidents of provinces and mayors. Absent announced Marta Fascina, the deputy and Berlusconi’s last companion who a month ago Tajani relegated to parliamentary space (“there is no need to carve out formal spaces for her”, she ruled). An infinite discussion is not foreseen (from the staff they assure that it will not go beyond the afternoon) until the vote and immediately after the intervention of Manfred Weber, leader of the European People’s Party, to seal the alliance with the moderates in Europe and therefore the distance by the sovereigns.

The weight of millionaire debts

Tajani will speak last. As an elected regent, one imagines. After all, the Foreign Minister has no official rivals or challengers for the leadership of the party. Weighed down – note the most mischievous – by millionaire debts that certainly do not appeal to anyone. In any case, the upheavals, which have been brewing internally for months due to a cross between rivalry and ambitions, seem to be under control. But thanks to the very recent death of the Knight, now the “revolution” can wait. This seems to be the password to establish a truce between currents destined to last until the next congress. It would be the first without the founder and the third in 29 years of the life of his creature. Tajani has assured that he will meet before the European elections in June 2024. For many, a gamble that could mortgage or condition the European vote and the very future of FI.

To the congress

But regardless of when, it will only be at the congress that alternatives to Tajani could emerge. This is implied by Mulè, who is closer to the “rebel” wing led by Licia Ronzulli, a long-time loyalist of the Cav but set aside in recent months. “We’ll see if from now on candidates will mature – says the deputy – within Fi or from civil society figures on whom Berlusconi has always bet”. He doesn’t exclude anyone, not even Berlusconi’s children. And indeed he remarks: «The doors are open to everyone and woe to close them, to make a selection of any kind».
