Tajani also attacks Macron: "Diplomatic gaffe. But Italy is not isolated"

The foreign minister espouses Meloni’s line and defines the dinner at the Elysée with Scholz and Zelensky “a mistake that does not strengthen Europe”. And on sending weapons to Ukraine he reassures: “There are no problems”

After the Franco-German summit with the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, criticized by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni yesterday in Brussels, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani will also intervene. Commenting on the incident in an interview with Corriere della Serathe Forza Italia coordinator talks about a “mistake that does not go in the direction of strengthening Europe’s action in favor of the freedom of Ukraine” And defines it a “diplomatic blunder”. The risk is to undermine relations between the two countries linked moreover by the Quirinale Treaty, currently frozen. Perhaps also for this reason, Tajani says he is confident and tries to tone down: “We will be able to leave”.

The most slippery element, however, remains the exclusion of the prime minister from a summit with an evident symbolic as well as diplomatic value: many have seen in what happened a symptom of Italy’s isolation on the international front. Minister Tajani clearly does not find himself in this reading: “Italy has a leading role on which we continue to work”. And it suggests that the Franco-German axis can be accompanied by an unprecedented – at least in the recent period – British-Italian alliance: “The UK sees us as a tier one partner and we see them as that.”

The difficulties at the international level are accompanied by internal controversies in the center-right coalition, which seem to follow Giorgia Meloni like a shadow in her busy diplomatic agenda. Tajani is also well aware of this, and therefore is keen to reiterate once again the “cohesion of the majority”. Also, and above all, on sending weapons to Ukraine: “The decree already exists, it will take a few weeks, but there are no problems”.

Finally, Tajani allows himself a last remark on yesterday’s decision by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, who rejected the request for revocation of the 41-bis for Alfredo Cospito. “I’m not worried, the decision was taken by the minister after reading the papers following the law”, explains the coordinator of Forza Italia. Emphasizing that “anarchists continue to organize demonstrations” and concluding with an expression repeated several times in recent days: “The state does not bow in the face of threats”.
